Innovation EXPO / Biotech Summit – Oct 18 – Sioux Falls Incubator, accelerator, angel, venture capital, research park, university and industry research, technology licensing and commercialization, entrepreneurship assistance, R&D tax credits are a few words that are part of the new lexicon for South Dakota universities. Plan on attending the “2007 Innovation EXPO” October 18 in Sioux Falls. Speakers include: · Rich Karlgaard, columnist for Forbes magazine "America's Coming Heartland Boom." · William Payne, noted entrepreneur and Angel investor. · John Calvert, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, “Intellectual Property Strategy”. The mission of the state’s Technology-Based Economic Development (TBED) program is to improve the standard of living of the residents and businesses of South Dakota, while simultaneously increasing the capacity to generate new opportunities for wealth creation through targeted strategies and investments focused on encouraging a combination of knowledge, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Register for the Innovation EXPO at http://www.sdei.org/ University of South Dakota - President’s Research Day – Wednesday, Oct. 25 The U’s annual celebration of research and creative activities will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the Warren M. Dept of Energy 2008 SBIR/STTR Solicitation is OPEN The closing date for this solicitation is November 27. There are 60 topic areas covering a wide range of research focus areas including: software and networking; measurement and detection instrumentation; medical devices; chemical reaction and chemical barrier technologies; nanotechnology; vehicle technologies; remote sensing, and nuclear, fossil fuel, geothermal, bio-fuels, wind, hydrogen, and solar energies. National Science Foundation 2008 SBIR/STTR Solicitation is OPEN Do not submit proposals prior to November 4, 2007. All proposals must be in by 5 pm December 4, 2007. SBIR proposals are limited to $100,000 while STTR proposals may request up to $150,000. Use NSF Fastlane for submitting proposals. Besides the budget limitations, the significant difference between the SBIR and STTR programs is that STTR requires researchers at universities to play a significant intellectual role in the conduct of each STTR project. These university-based researchers, by joining forces with a small company, can spin-off their commercially promising ideas while they remain primarily employed at the research institution. NSF anticipates making 125 SBIR Phase I awards and approximately 25 STTR Phase I awards. NOAA 2008 SBIR Solicitation Opens Oct 17th Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (DOC/NOAA) seeks Phase I proposals from small business firms. NOAA R&D topics available for Phase I: Ecosystems, Climate, Weather and Water, and Commerce and Transportation. Six month Phase I performance period with a maximum award of $95,000.
